Einstein on Religion: Childish Superstitions

Considered by many as the most brilliant scientist of the 20th century, Albert Einstein was notorious for his ability to see what is essential and disregard the meaningless. Albert Einstein Thus it comes to as no surprise to rational people that he held all religions in very low esteem.

A letter written by Einstein will be auctioned off this week, it is a letter which reveals the contempt Einstein felt toward religious delusions.

“The word god is for me nothing more than the expression and product of human weaknesses, the Bible a collection of honourable, but still primitive legends which are nevertheless pretty childish. No interpretation no matter how subtle can (for me) change this.”

Religion has always been of the stupid, by the stupid, and for the stupid. Survey after survey has demonstrated a clear correlation between advanced education and freedom from religious delusions.

It makes sense that people who are not stupid would do better in the educational system, and they would therefore be represented in greater numbers among persons with advanced degrees. Stupid people, having less ability to differentiate between superstition and fact, are less likely to recognize and rid themselves of false ideas learned by naive children.

So be careful about the lies you tell to your children involving invisible fairies that live in the sky. It is possible that they may never learn that there is no Santa Claus, the Easter Bunny is really a person, and there are no invisible fairies up above the clouds.

And for the Fundamentalists who try to claim that the smartest man they ever heard of was suffering from religious delusions like theirs, this letter represents epic failure.

Of course they could always pray that their Imaginary Bearded Sky Daddy will use his magical ink re-arrangement powers to rewrite Einstein’s letter so that it conforms to their favorite fantasies.
